Bowl Carving Demonstration with Danielle Rose Byrd

Join us for an educational demonstration led by Danielle Rose Byrd. In this 3 hour program, Danielle will take you through the steps of carving a bowl with power carvers and hand tools. Her methods draw from traditional Scandinavian sloyd work, improvisation, and experimental techniques developed through trial and error.

Though 3 hours is only a fraction of the time it takes to complete one piece, she’ll have on hand some examples of her finished work. Quick clarifying questions and interaction are encouraged throughout, and time will be set aside after the demonstration for more in-depth explanations and discussion.

About the instructor:

Danielle Rose Byrd is a sculptor and carver who makes vessels, objects and home furnishings. Her work blurs the lines between art and craft, exploring themes of power dynamics, the inconsistent social weight of utility, and the function of beauty.

Danielle has written for Fine Woodworking, Popular Woodworking, and Mortise & Tenon Magazine, and from 2014-17 traveled the country with Lie-Nielsen Toolworks teaching hand tool woodworking fundamentals. In 2018 she was awarded the Belvedere Handcraft Fellowship by the Maine Arts Commission. Her first book, The Handcarved Bowl, was published in 2021.
