Position: Program Director
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Tear Cap Workshops seeks a qualified and enthusiastic Program Director to join our team. This is a new position for our growing organization; the right candidate would have non-profit experience and be passionate about our mission to enhance creative opportunities in western Maine. Experience in arts or craft programing for adults is preferred.
The Program Director will report to the Executive Director and will be an integral contributor to the organization’s successful operation. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative, organized and imaginative partner, helping to direct current programs, conceptualize possible future initiatives, and develop the processes and relationships necessary to achieve them. The position is responsible for the day-to-day operational requirements that ensure the success of those programs and workshops, including budgeting, project management, and evaluation.
The Program Director must be well-versed in craft, design, and the visual arts with strong relationships with artists and institutions in the field preferred, and the ability to build collaboration within the community and make new connections.
The position is in-person, with some remote work possible. Full time, 30 – 40 hours a week. Flexible work hours, but availability on some weekends for workshops is a must.
Pay is $24,000 – $36,000 a year, depending on experience.
Responsibilities include the following:
Program Development: Scheduling, writing program descriptions, and hosting hands-on programs in a variety of creative disciplines (woodworking, fiber arts, basket weaving, stone wall building, pottery, and more!)
– Budgeting and grant writing
– Excellent communication skills
With assistance, to manage and oversee the maintenance of Tear Cap workspaces, namely the Community Woodworking Shop
Skill sets:
– Engagement with the mission, vision, and history of Tear Cap Workshops
– Background in craft, design, the visual arts, or related fields
– Experience in studio, workshop, and educational program development, management, budgeting, and evaluation
– Ability to develop relationships with emerging, established, and celebrated artists and instructors
– Experience with studio or classroom organization, budgeting, management, and maintenance
– Familiarity with studio operations in a craft discipline or related field
– Planning and project management skills, strong organization, and attention to detail

Internship Opportunities
Position: Garden Manager
POSITION DESCRIPTION: We are searching for a new position at Tear Cap Workshops: a Garden Manager who will be responsible for the care and upkeep of the vegetable garden plot at the campus. The goal of the garden space is two-fold: to be an educational resource for the community and to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for some of our special events, to provide snacks (like snap peas or cherry tomatoes) for our classes, fresh cutting flowers for decorations as needed, and some special plants for special uses (like dyeing or eco printing.)
This is an unpaid internship position, but the person responsible for the position is entitled to 50% of the produce produced for their own use. Any extra produce, not immediately needed for a Tear Cap Workshops event, may either be sold to benefit Tear Cap Workshops or donated to a local food pantry.
The Garden Manager is charged with the upkeep of Tear Cap Workshops’ organic garden plot, a 70 foot by 50 foot fenced space with a small pond adjacent for irrigation. As this is a new position, excellent communication skills are a must as we develop the Garden Manager position and address any new opportunities or challenges that arise.
This position begins with a 15 – 25 hour a week commitment. (Flexible hours and days of the week.)
Responsibilities include the following:
Food Production & Garden Maintenance
– Plans and oversees daily operations of the vegetable garden space, an plot roughly 70 feet x 50 feet.
– Maintains the overall aesthetic of our vegetable garden.
– Manages the care of herbs, vegetables, flowers, and other perennials at all stages of growth.
– Maintains all records electronically, including pest management strategies, harvests, etc.
– Ensures that Tear Cap Workshops is meeting the requirements of garden funders.
– Helps recruit and supervise garden volunteers, with assistance from the Tear Cap Workshops staff
Community Engagement & Outreach
– Supports trainings and workshops to community members, in partnership with the staff of Tear Cap Workshops
– Serves as a support and liaison to the garden and Tear Cap Workshops at large
– Maintains and grows relationships with local food banks and food-related organizations
Investigates and cultivates partnerships with other community-based organizations, businesses, and more.
Administrative / Other
– Maintains financial and operational records as appropriate.
– Assists the Tear Cap Workshops staff with grants pertaining to food justice and nutrition.
– Represents Tear Cap Workshops at public events, conferences, and workshops.
Is prepared to lend a hand throughout the organization as needed.
Qualifications
– 6 months+ of experience in farming and vegetable production
– Enthusiasm for gardening, growing, and vegetables; some experience developing and implementing community farming and gardening preferred
– Attention to detail and ability to keep detailed records
– Ability to work outside in all weather (rain, heat, cold) and lift up to 50 lbs. safely
Ability to work collaboratively in a small team
