Introduction to Encaustics
Welcome to the wonderful world of encaustics! Encaustic painting is also known as hot wax painting, and it involves applying heated wax and colored pigments to a prepared wood surface. The layered effects of this ancient art creates rich optical patterns and expression to the pigment.
This workshop will give an introduction to the basic information about encaustic painting — what the paint is made of and a brief history of the process — as well as basic techniques to apply and manipulate layers of encaustic wax to create a painting. Participants are encouraged to ask questions about other methods and techniques, but we will only be practicing basic applications.
Participants will get a basic pallet of encaustic paint colors as well as clear medium, scrap pieces to practice on and panels to paint on. Come learn an ancient art, have fun, and express yourself in a new medium!
No experience necessary; all tools and supplies provided.
