IKEBANA WORKSHOP

Learn the gentle, meditative art of Japanese Flower Arranging. Join us for an introduction to the practice of Kado (way of flowers). You will learn the basic principles of design, best natural elements to use, and philosophy behind this beautiful art form. Our instructor, Melinda Thomas, is from the Sogetsu School, and a member of Ikebana International. Students will receive a ceramic base, kenzan and pick to take home so they can keep their arrangement and create others. Flowers, stems and leaves will be available, but you may also bring your own collection. Instructor will email each student a list of natural materials you may find in your own year before class.
HAND-BUILT POTTERY WITH KATHY BANKS
September 3, 10 and 17, 2024 ~ 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
$125 includes materials, including clay and glaze
Class limited to 8 participants
Learn about this fun, inspiring and relaxing craft while creating your own hand-built items. On Day 1, participants will form their hand-built pottery pieces, experimenting with techniques that add interest and originality. Pieces will then be fired and participants will glaze on Day 2 in preparation for final glaze. Pick up will be on September 17. Each participant will take home 3-8 pieces. Bring materials you may want to experiment with, including lace, stamps and plants.
STONE WALL BUILDING WITH KARL GIFFORD
September 28, 2024 ~ 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with break for lunch
$225 tuition for full day and includes lunch
Class limited to 8 participants
Join Karl Gifford, DSWA-GB Level II, for this intensive class in how to build dry stone walls. Participants will learn the basic rules of structural walling that can be applied to any type of stone and project, including retaining walls and seat walls.. This workshop is suited to both beginners and those with previous experience. During the day, each student will build about 25 square feet of wall on one side, using round field stone. Please wear work clothes and bring gloves and safety glasses. Lunch is provided. Please email Melinda@tearcapworkshops if you have special dietary concerns.
BASKET MAKING WORKSHOP – CAROLINE’S COUNTERTOP CUTIE
October 22, 2024 ~ 9:00 am to 2:00 pm

This basket is the perfect take-along. Learn how to weave with professional basketmaker Ida Atkinson. This workshop will introduce you to materials, weaving techniques, and finishing skills. No experience needed but those with previous skills welcome to learn a new design. This basket design is sturdy and includes a wrapped handle, which may be a new skill for those with some experience.
SPOON CARVING WITH KEN WISE
November 2, 2024 ~ 9:00 am to 4:00 pm
$65 includes materials–up to three hardwood blanks
Class limited to 8 participants
This class provides you with the knowledge and skills that will allow you to create wooden spoons and spatulas to your heart’s content. Using local hardwoods like cherry, maple, apple and birch, students will learn carving techniques. Shave horses, tolls and materials are provided. Some tool sharpening basics will be covered. Students will be able to purchase additional blanks the day of class.
WOOD SHAVINGS ORNAMENTS – two workshops available

Instructor Kathy Banks will guide us in making our own Scandinavian-style wood shaving ornaments using hand planes, wood glue and wood shavings. We will learn traditional patterns and also how to design our own patterns with curls. These ornaments make beautiful gifts. Participants will be able to make several ornaments during the workshop. A fun and productive workshop that is appropriate for ages 10 years old and up.
